Dudu-Orumen hands more work to Edo sports associations’ reform committee
One week after constituting a five-man committee to come up with ideas of revamping sports association in Edo State and bring them to Olympics standard, Edo State Sports Commission (ESSC) chairman, Barrister Godwin Dudu-Orumen, has given the committee an expanded terms of reference.
In setting up the committee last week, the ESSC boss said the need to set up the committee was driven by the desire of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s dream to return Edo State to its pre-eminent position as a leading sports state in the country.
He said the committee suggest ways of making the various Sports Associations run professionally and efficiently in order to contribute to the realisation of the dream. He said the, which is drawn from a pool of experts including sports administrators, journalists and businessman, will advise the commission on the best ways to make the associations play a more dynamic and professional role in discovering and nurturing talents that will compete and win laurels for Edo State in local, national and international competitions.
In the expanded terms of reference made available to the committee on Friday by the ESSC boss, the committee is expected:
1) To advise on the appropriate legal framework that will enable the Boards operate efficiently and in a cost effective manner in carrying out its mandate.
2) To take a look at the operational efficiency of the Boards as presently constituted and make suggestions on the best ways they can operate in a result oriented manner.
3) To determine the adequacy of their Governance and Management structure and make recommendations on improvement if inadequate.
4) Make recommendations on the adoption of a business model of operation, appropriate form of governance, board roles, composition and size.
5) Look at the desirability or otherwise of increasing the current number of Boards to capture new Sports that can be introduced in Edo State in order to enhance its ability to produce new Star athletes that will win laurels for the state in local and international competitions.
6) To look at the funding of the Associations and suggest new funding sources aside from government funding.
7) To suggest ways and means the Associations can organise and fund regular competitions at local government and state levels in the quest to discover and nurture talents that will compete and win laurels for Edo State in national and international competitions.
8) To recommend how the Associations can enhance the quality of coaches and games officials through regular in house and external training opportunities.
9) To advise on any other matter it may deem fit in enhancing the efficiency of the Boards/Associations.
10)And make all such recommendations that can make Sports Associations veritable vehicles for the revival, rejuvenation and repositioning of Edo Sports.
The Committee, which is headed by Smarts Ebhodaghe, a vastly experienced journalist, has 6 weeks, beginning from December 1st to turn in its report.
