#ENDSARS PROTESTS: Prisons under attack in Lagos, Delta, Ondo
By Joy Okosieme
The #ENDSARS PROTESTS continued on Thursday with protesters attacking prison facilities in at least three states in the country.
In the early hours of today protesters alleged to be thugs stormed the Ikoyi Prisons in Lagos in an attempt to free inmates.
Eyewitnesses say the move was resisted by officers of the prisons assisted by soldiers who shot at the protesters and inmates who attempted to escape.
Residents of the area reported hearing sound of gunfire as the team of guards at the correctional facility and soldiers tried to foil the attempted jailbreak. No life has been reported lost but witnesses says a number of inmates were injured by the gunfire.
In Ondo, hoodlums broke into the National Correctional Centre in Okitipupa Local Government Area where they reportedly burnt vehicles, manhandled staff of the prison and freed over fifty inmates.
A similar scenario almost played out in at the Warri Prisons in Delta State as thugs burnt a section of the facility in a
failed attempt at freeing inmates. The hoodlums were said to have been repelled by soldiers who prevented the inmates from escaping.
Today’s attacks on the prisons is coming on the heels of the storming of two prisons in Benin City on Monday where hoodlums freed nearly 2000 protesters according to figures released by the Ministry of Interior on Tuesday.
