Many Trapped by Imo Landslide

Many residents in an Imo Community were trapped as a result of a landslide which occured place in the area on Saturday.
The tragic incident happened on Trinity Street, Akwakuma, Owerri North Local Government Area of the state.
The landslide led to the cutting off of over six buildings including
residential band commercial structures leaving their occupants trapped.
Two major churches around that area, the St. Philip’s Anglican Church, and the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, were also affected.
One of the victims,w Emma Ogu, a lecturer in the department of Mass Communication, Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, said many residents in that area, including his family, had been trapped in their homes.
The Commissioner for Environment in the state, Dr. Ike Njoku said some officials of the ministry had visited the area.
He advised those affected in the area to always monitor the level of water flow in the area.
He said, “It is a big problem for the state. This is because there are more than 300 erosion sites in Imo. Meanwhile, We have taken the matter to the state government, which has slated the area as one of those area that require urgent attention”.
