Iwuanyanwu, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, dies at 82

The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, is dead.

Chief Iwuanyanwu passed on Thursday morning after a brief illness, his son, Jide, said in a statement.

The statement read, “The Iwuanyanwu family of Umuohii Atta, in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State announces the demise of our patriarch, Engr Chief Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu-Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo.

“Chief Iwuanyanwu died on Thursday, July 25, 2024, after a brief illness. He was aged 82.

“Chief Iwuanyanwu before his death was President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide and President of Owerri Peoples Assembly.”

The late businessman left behind his wife, Frances Iwuanyanwu and numerous children and grandchildren.

The statement said his family will announce funeral arrangements at the appropriate time after due consultations.

The departed Ohaneze Ndigbo leader was a towering figure in Nigerian politics, business and sports. renowned businessman and politician. Born in September 1942 in Umuohii, Ikeduru LGA, Imo State, Chief Iwuanyanwu became a national recognized figure with his foray into newspaper publishing and football business.
He was the founder of now rested Champion Newspaper and the famous Nigerian football club, Iwuanyanwu Nationale FC (later Heartland FC), winner of national football titles.

Until his death he was the 11th President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
