President of the Nigerian Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki has accused Nigeria’s Police Chief, Ibrahim Idris, of plotting to implicate him in a crime.

Inspector General of Police, Idris and the Senate over which Saraki presides have been engaged in a battle of wits over the Police Chief’s refusal to honour summons extended to it by the Senate.

Saraki, who made the allegation against IGP Idris during plenary on Wednesday, said he was informed on Tuesday night by the Governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed that the Police Chief had ordered that some suspected criminals arrested in Ilorin, capital of Kwara State be taken to Abuja and their statements altered to rope Saraki into their crime. Saraki described the alleged plot by the IGP as an invitation to anarchy.

“Last night, my state governor, revealed to me an information at his disposal that a group of suspects who have been arrested in our state for cultism, whose investigation has been completed and were about to be under prosecution under the state law on the advise of the ministry of justice, all of a sudden were ordered to be transferred to Abuja this morning,” Saraki said.

Saraki said information at his disposal indicate that the Commissioner of Police In Kwara State has been directed by the IGP to bring the suspects to Abuja. He said in Abuja, the IGP would find a way to alter their statement already made in Ilorin and try and implicate him and the government of Kwara State.

“I feel that as we speak now, these suspects are already here in Abuja.
These acts I don’t know whether to call it desperation or intimidation, all actions to undermine our democracy, a recipe for anarchy because we are doing our work by asking officials to obey the law, due process and subject themselves to constituted authority,” Saraki said. He added that:

“I think it is important to call your attention to this dangerous development. The impunity happening in this country is a danger to our democracy.”
